General Rules About Renting Porta Potties for An Event

February 3, 2022

People hosting an outdoor event know they need to rent porta potties, so the question isn’t if you need porta potties—it’s how many porta potties do you need for an event.

Keep reading to learn how many units you’ll need to rent.

How many porta potties do you need for an event?

Knowing how many porta potties you need to rent isn’t a guessing game. There’s actually somewhat of a formula for determining the number of porta potties per event size. Follow these guidelines to ensure you rent the correct number of units:

  • Length of event: The first thing to consider is how long your event lasts. Generally, one porta potty can handle 50 people for four hours, so if you’re hosting a small outdoor gathering for only a few hours, a single unit should suffice. If you’ve got an all-day outdoor event with 200 people, you should bump your porta potty count up to eight or more.
  • Guests with disabilities: Those with limited mobility need to use the restroom too. Big or small, all public events need to have at least one handicap-accessible porta potty per 20 guests. At Pit Stop Portables, we have units that meet Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requirements, so there’s no need to turn to anyone but us when you need to rent porta potties.
  • Alcohol services: Alcoholic drinks make people have to urinate more frequently. You should increase your porta potty count by 20 percent if any alcohol will be served at your event.

How many porta potties do you need for a construction site?

It should come as no surprise that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has standards for bathroom usage. According to OSHA guidelines, workers must have easy access to “adequate and readily accessible sanitation facilities,” meaning there needs to be plenty of units available, and they need to be nearby.

OSHA states that there must be one toilet per every 15 employees; however, most experts recommend cutting that down to one unit per every 10 workers to better accommodate all employees. After all, you can never have too many units when it comes to portable toilets.

What about sanitation stations?

Handwashing stations are crucial if you’re going to be selling or serving food at your event. There’s no set rule for how many handwashing stations you need to rent, but we say more is better now that we’re all taking extra care to keep our hands clean. Consider adding at least one handwashing station per every four portable toilets to keep your event safe and sanitary.
